Rankings Ploum Legal 500 – 2020
The Legal 500 Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) released the 2020 rankings this week. The Legal 500 is a survey conducted annually based on feedback from clients and extensive independent research in the market. Ploum has again achieved good results this year. Energy: transactional – Ranked: tier 2
Rotterdam-based Ploum is best known for handling projects for oil and gas companies and assists energy companies, including two of the four largest Dutch energy companies – NUON – Vattenfall and Eneco on M&A transactions. ‘Excellent dealmaker’ Stephan Sluijters, who leads the energy team together with Deborah Nizamoeddin, is increasingly instructed with respect to renewables.

Environment and planning – Ranked: tier 2
Ploum has in-depth expertise in environment and planning law, especially issues concerning refineries and tank storage. Key clients include petroleum companies BP and Shell, as well as tank storage companies Vopak and Maasvlakte Olie Terminal. Maayke Maas-Cooymans and Alexandra Danopoulos lead the practice. Maas-Cooymans is assisting HKZ Devex with the tender procedure for the development of Hollandse Kust. Stephan F.J. Sluiter also advised on this matter.

Data privacy and data protection – Ranked: tier 3
At Ploum, Dennis Zieren leads a team along with senior partners Dorine ten Brink and Miranda Top-Sarneel. The team is valued for its in-depth knowledge of privacy issues and for providing ‘sanity checks’ for clients. Its expertise spans the notification and aftermath of major personal data breaches; advice on a variety of data privacy matters, such as inter-company data transfers inside and outside of the EEA, and data retention. This is combined with expertise in direct marketing, camera surveillance, and the use of personal data in the healthcare sector.

Ploum’s expertise is focused on health, safety and environmental issues, and it is a popular choice for clients in the chemical or construction sectors. The team primarily assists the insured parties, but also acts on behalf of insurance companies, brokerage companies and loss adjusters. The firm’s other key area of strength is in the field of professional liability, particularly directors’ and officers’ liability. In recent highlights, practice head Natalie Vloemans led a team which represented construction consortium SAAone in a €15m insurance claim against several Dutch underwriters. Dispute resolution: commercial litigation – Ranked: tier 4
Rotterdam-based Ploum is home to a dispute resolution team with good experience in a multitude of areas, including contractual and extra-contractual disputes, corporate litigation, insolvency-related matters, disputes in the customs and trade area, and product liability cases. Maurice Verhoeven leads the team and has considerable expertise in professional liability.
